In These Tumultuous Times

A white dove with an olive branch is painted on a rock. It is set before a tribute to anti-war protests.

In these tumultuous times, the weight of global conflicts can be overwhelming. Your shoulders burdened, your head clouded, the path before you uneven as you trudge through the muck-- metaphorical and otherwise. From the distressing images emerging from conflicts in Palestine, Ukraine, and Sudan to the blurred lines of identity and values, the world feels disorienting. Many of us share a deep ache for those living in unjust circumstances and empathize with those whose voices remain unheard.

Amidst the heated discussions and emotional intensity, it's essential to recognize that this strain is not a new phenomenon. Humanity has grappled with similar questions since time immemorial. While this might be disheartening, it also underscores our enduring commitment to justice, liberty, and truth.

Reflecting on history, our predecessors faced their own trials in times such as World War II. Uncertain about the future, they navigated each day with resourcefulness, developing new skills, and uniting with their communities. People marched in protests, rallied together, wrote letters, and voted; celebrating even their seemingly smallest victories during challenging times. When any of these capabilities were denied to them they raised awareness. They braved the trials by fire and in the heat of adversity, as the phoenix did, they rose from the ashes stronger still. Those who endured the most horrible atrocities known to humanity found their own ways to resist. In doing so, they set an example of righteousness for those to follow.

Today, as we witness a world seemingly ablaze, it's okay to feel overwhelmed. You are not alone in your disappointment with global leadership. However, amid these challenges, there is hope. Countries like South Africa have taken a stand against war crimes, and individuals worldwide are marching, speaking out, and enhancing their skills to be effective agents of change. Even Israeli citizens who disagree with their government's policies are leaving their country and protesting its crimes against humanity.

Dear reader, your humanity is not diminished by these feelings of despair and grief. Your response in these moments defines your character. Despite weariness, your resilience has brought you to this point. Take a deep breath and remember that you are here. In the face of difficulty, there is always hope. Consider the person you want to be when reflecting on your life—your actions now shape that narrative. By living in the moment, we create the world we want to form.

Do not let naysayers lead you to believe that even the smallest acts of bravery will amount to nothing. A child is not born without the aches and scars that come with the process. A harvest is not reaped without neither rain or toil. Something valuable is never gained without loss, and if it be privilege we should consider ourselves most fortunate.
